Guy Berryman for MARRKT
“Guy Berryman is best known for playing bass in Coldplay – one of the biggest bands of the 21st century, having sold more than 100 million records in its 25 year history. What fewer people know is that he’s also the designer and creative force behind the newly launched menswear label Applied Art Forms.”
I remember when ‘Yellow’ was released by Coldplay in the year 2000, it was one of those moments when you hear something and know it’s like nothing that’s coke before it. Fast forward 22 years and both I and Guy Berryman the band’s bass guitarist find ourselves on his Cotswold estate in his design studio.
When a friend Lewis Hull of MARRKT called and asked weather I was interested in shooting Guy for a ‘Featured Seller’ story on the site I jumped at the chance.
I really enjoy the intimacy and spontaneity of this type of feature.
Guy has a fashion brand called Applied Artforms and it was really interesting hearing him talk about his inspirations and looking through the collection.
Guy was at University College London studying Mechanical Engineering when Coldplay were formed so I thought it fitting that I shot some films of him. I hadn’t planned in advance to shoot analogue so I gathered what film I had in the office and ended up shooting a 35mm and a roll of 120mm on my trusty Bronica 6x4.5. Guy was super interested in the manual cameras and I'm really glad I was able to add a bit of old school and the lab at Take It Easy scan contacts sheets for me to include.
A particular highlight for me was guys car collection, as a fellow petrolhead myself it was very special to look around his stunning collection and although Guy wasn’t keen on ‘showing them off’ in the feature I did get a few shots on my phone.
